The Wall Around Her Heart

If you could feel the pain in her eyes,
You’d probably sit and want to cry.

Her heart is lonely and turning cold
From all the hurt of stories untold.

The man who loved and broke her heart,
Was assuredly when the pain did start.

But other struggles of life did come,
Each leaving her more and more numb.

With every face that claimed to be true,
Somehow they hurt her, leaving her blue.

Now she wonders who she can trust,
But each time she tries, it turns to rust.

It seems to be safer to build up walls,
Keeping out everyone’s attempts at calls.

For if they are a safe distance away
Her heart can’t break when they stray.
